The cake’s orange
I whispered to my husband. He whispered back “Cut the cake, cut the cake”. We were standing in front of our wedding cake and the cake wasn’t supposed to be orange. It was supposed to be white.
At the time, it felt like a disaster. There wasn’t anything I could do about it. I grit my teeth and cut the cake. A small problem in the grand scheme of things right? 🙂
I know countless entrepreneurs who have given webinars to 0 or 1 person, employees who have chatted on the wrong chat channel, presentations failing to beam, demos not showing what they are supposed to – been there done that, got the T-shirt. We are often so afraid of problems or mistakes yet it’s these small things that are memorable.
This is where we learn from – way more than when everything goes smoothly. It helps us prepare more. It helps us not take ourselves so seriously. It reminds us we’re human. It gives us a good story sometimes later on at the dinner table, over a drink at the pub or some, only years later when we’ve gotten over it.
Yes, I would have liked my wedding cake to be white. But then, I probably wouldn’t remember it as well as I do now. Yup, it was definitely orange and that’s ok. Whenever I order cakes, I am crystal clear with the colour I want it to be. 🙂
