I’ve been listening to Michelle Obama’s book Becoming and I’ve gotten to the part she is considering leaving her lawyer job to go to City Hall and do something that feels more meaningful for her.
Many people say that they want to do something more meaningful, but how serious are they about it?
Some people make the jump out of corporate and into a job that tends to pay less but may be more satisfying or rewarding. Some stay knowing it’s a golden cage, feeling like there has to be more to life but have this “What if” thought running through the back of their mind.
It doesn’t have to be so black and white. You don’t have to leave your well-paying corporate job in order to have impact. You can have as much impact within a company, sometimes even more. You can do something on the side such as volunteering, building something or contributing to a group. Something that is meaningful for you. There are many ways to give back if that is what is what you want to do.
I’m a big believer that there’s no better time than now to get started. Especially if you have had such thoughts for a while. Explore different avenues, speak to people about how they made changes, research organisations and try things out to see what fits you best. Everyone starts somewhere.
